Seeking the latest advances in green construction and technology, this owner (a general contractor himself) opted to build a “Zum” style Unity home. In collaboration with HVP, Unity provided the pre-fab outer shell: thick, super-insulated walls and triple-glazed, tilt-turn windows. Air-source heat pumps for HVAC and the hot water heater, using CO2 as a refrigerant (think lower global warming potential), were installed; and south-facing solar panels provide for the low energy demands of this airtight construction. While the makings of this home are all high-performance and energy-efficient, the interior finishes push their own boundaries: durable concrete flooring, recessed lighting with a seamless look, contemporary kitchen with sintered stone countertops and bold colors defining spaces. Exposed timbers and wood detailing are also found throughout, reminding the homeowner of the natural “green” credentials within.
